Two injured in city transformer blast die

Two persons, who were injured in a transformer blast in the capital on Wednesday, died on Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Mohammad Maruf, 17, and Mohammad Hiro, 40.

Two of the injured: Sarwar, 20 and Sohag, 30 are now undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the capital.

Earlier on Wednesday, an electric transformer blast at Islambagh in Chawk Bazar of the capital left five persons injured.

Of the injured, two died at about 12:10am and 6:00am on Thursday.

Dr Partha Shankar Paul, resident surgeon of the institute, said that the condition of Sarwar is critical as he suffered burns on 48 percent surface of his body while eight percent of Sohag’s body was burnt.

Mohammad Abdul Kaium, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chawk  Bazar Police Station, told the Daily Sun that  a transformer of on electric poles adjacent to Madina Petrol Pump at Swarighat exploded.

The blast left five passerbies injured. They were sent to Mitford Hospital and later shifted to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery where Maruf died around 12:10am.

Anwar Hossain, maternal uncle of Maruf, said his nephew worked at a shop.

He was returning to his house at East Rasulpur in Kamrangirchar after closing the shop at Chawk Bazar, he said.

On the way, Maruf, son of Amir Hossain, sustained burn injuries as the transformer went off.

Meanwhile, Hiro died at a private hospital at Shyamoli on Thursday morning, said police.

He was first taken to Mitford Hospital from where he was shifted to the private hospital.
