Man arrested for ‘smuggling’ poppy seeds

Members of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police have arrested a businessman for allegedly smuggling 42 tonnes of poppy seeds worth Tk 150 million from abroad in the name of importing mustard seeds.

A team of the CID’s Lawful Interception Cell (LIC) nabbed the businessman named Akhil Chandra Mandal, proprietor of Hot Line Cargo International, from the capital’s Agargaon area on Tuesday.

Mukta Dhar, superintendent of police of the CID, briefed reporters on the matter at the CID headquarters in the city on Wednesday. 

On June 1, members of Chattogram Customs seized 42 tonnes of poppy seeds at Chattogram Port. Azmain Trade Centre under the licence of importing mustard seeds brought the poppy seeds. The authority filed a case with Bandar Police Station in this regard on June 3.

The officer said the CID arrested Akhil in connection with the case.

They were trying to capture other persons involved in the crime, she said.
