Banks will remain closed in next four days from Thursday due to bank holiday, weekend and lockdown, said Bangladesh Bank on Wednesday.

Thursday, July 1, is the bank holiday marking the completion of the first half of the year. Friday and Saturday are the weekend.

Considering the pandemic situation and the government-announced strict lockdown, Bangladesh Bank also decided to keep banks closed this Sunday.

The central bank also reduced transaction hours setting new time from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm till July 7.

The daily transactions would continue up to 3:30 pm until the fresh lockdown was imposed. Bangladesh Bank said the decisions were made after the government had imposed a set of restrictions to contain public movement amid the surge of coronavirus cases.

The central bank’s department of off-site supervision on Thursday issued a notification in this regard and sent it to the top executives of all scheduled banks.

It said the previous circular on banks’ operation issued on June 16 had been postponed.

According to the central bank directives, the banks will keep one non-AD branch open within a 2km radius in the city corporation areas while in ports areas the bank branches will remain open along with local administration’s offices.

Private commercial banks will keep a branch open in each district headquarters and at least two branches outside the district headquarters.

The state-owned banks will arrange to keep a branch open in every district and upazila level.

The circular, however, said the banks will ensure uninterrupted online services and internet banking operations.

Bangladesh Bank asked the banks to keep adequate banknotes at the ATM booths following health and hygiene guidelines.
