Iqbal Ahmed, former chief of Bangla Department of the Voice of America (VOA), passed away in Maryland of  the USA on Sunday. He was 82.

He was laid to eternal rest in Maryland on Tuesday.

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen and VOA family expressed deep shock at the death of Iqbal Ahmed.

Iqbal Ahmed was the younger brother of Ishtiaq Ahmed, who founded the Bangla section of the VOA in 1958.

The veteran journalist served as the head of the Bangla section of VOA from 1983 to 1994.

He joined the programme section of the American international broadcaster at the age of 20. Initially he worked as a part timer but later his job was confirmed.

Iqbal Ahmed was born in an aristocratic family in Old Dhaka’s Islampur. He studied at Collegiate High School and Jagannath College. After completing graduation, he went to America for higher studies.
