Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Monday said that they expect Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to be a strong opposition party in the country.

“The party, which does not have the backbone and suffer from indecisiveness, cannot succeed as an opposition. The path to democracy becomes smoother when the opposition party is strong and responsible,” he said.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said this while addressing a press briefing at his secretariat office in the capital. The AL spokesperson came up with the remark replying to an allegation of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir that Awami League will not find out a path to flee if people raise their voices.

Posing a question why BNP stay off election if it has strength and public support, Quader said, “Why did BNP fail to engage its party leaders and activists with the movement amid repeated announcement of waging movement?”

Mentioning that Awami League is not an escapist, the minister said his party had an engagement with all achievement and happiness of the people of the country.

“People are the strength of the Awami League. The party is not an escapist one. Root of Awami League is in very deep on the soil of this country,” he said.

Pointing finger at BNP, Quader said the political party has a mentality to run away and that’s why it tries to label Awami League with the stigma.

“Actually, BNP belongs to such mentality. Did Mirza Fakhrul forget that their leader had fled to London by giving undertaking?” he said adding that they should bring back their corrupt leader from abroad if they have courage.

Earlier, Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka Vikram Doraiswami made a courtesy call to Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on the day.
