Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad leaders on Sunday called upon the country’s Hindu community to celebrate Sri Sri Jagannath Dev’s Rath Jatra by maintaining health guidelines.

They made the call at a views-exchange meeting with journalists on the premises of Dhakeshwari National Temple in Dhaka marking the upcoming Rath Jatra, which will be celebrated on July 12.

Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad President Milan Kanti Dutta chaired the meeting moderated by its general secretary Nirmal Kumar Chattarjee.

The Hindu community leaders said the government has already announced a strict lockdown beginning on July 1 to contain the spread of coronavirus transmission.

They said they had observed Rath Jatra last year on a limited scale amid the coronavirus.

In such situation Rath Jatra will be confined to the temple premises following religious rituals. Pulling the Rath (chariot) will also be restricted within the temple premises, they said.

Visitors at the temple, priests and officials must wear masks and temple authorities will have to ensure facilities to wash hands and use sanitizer.

No one will be allowed to stay in temple for a long period of time and physical distancing will be maintained.
