At least six people were killed and about 50 others wounded as a massive explosion ripped through a building in Moghbazar area of the capital on Sunday night.
The reason behind the explosion could not be known immediately, but it was suspected that the blast might have resulted from an air conditioner (AC).The injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery and other hospitals, confirmed Faisalur Rahman, station officer of the Fire Service Civil Defence.
He said the explosion took place around 7:35pm in the building in Moghbazar Wireless Gate area.
“We primarily suspected that an air conditioner caused the explosion," he said.
Eyewitnesses said an explosion occurred suddenly, damaging a portion of the building.
Flying debris fell on the vehicles plying the nearby road, burning down some of them, they added.
Inmates of the building and passengers of the buses among the victims, they mentioned.Arshad Hossain, duty officer of the Fire Service control room, told the Daily Sun that 14 units of firefighters took part in the rescue operation.
He said they primarily came to know that an air conditioner (AC) went off in the building. A number of people died, but could not know the exact figure, he added.
When contacted, Harun-Or-Rashid, additional deputy commissioner of Ramna Zone under Ramna Crime Division, could not confirm what caused the explosion.
“We came to know that a number of people died, but the exact number could not be known immediately,” he said.
He also said a huge crowd gathered around the building which was badly affecting their rescue operation.
It was known from a source that eight people died in the explosion, but another source said the explosion killed five people.
A team of Counter Terrorism and Transitional Crime unit of police visited the spot to investigate whether there was any sabotage.
Meanwhile, an AC exploded in another building at Moghbazar in the afternoon, said Officer-in-Charge of Hatirjheel Police Station Abdur Rashid.
There was no report of casualties till the filing of this report.
