MADARIPUR: A legal notice has been served against Madaripur district Awami League president Shahabuddin Ahmed Molla for his ‘derogatory’ comment on one of the organisers of the country’s Liberation War and valiant freedom fighter late Moulvi Asmat Ali Khan, also former lawmaker and founding president of the district Awami League.

Former general secretary of Madaripur District Bar Association Advocate Golam Kibria on behalf of Makbul Hossain Mia, a valiant freedom fighter, sent the legal notice on Saturday. The notice said: “The recent comment made by Shahabuddin Molla about awarding Swadhinata Padak (posthumous) to Moulvi Asmat Ali Khan shows disrespect for all the freedom fighters; therefore, the person who made such a disparaging comment has to apologize within the next 30 days; otherwise legal action will be taken against him.”

Asmat Ali Khan, also father of Awami League presidium member and former shipping minister Shajahan Khan, was elected lawmaker three times from Madaripur. He was also one of the founding members of the then Awami Muslim League and a close associate of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He was awarded Swadhinata Padak-2016 for his courageous role in the country’s Liberation war.

In a recent programme, Madaripur district Awami League president Shahabuddin Molla raised a question about awarding Swadhinata Padak to late Asmat Ali Khan.  Molla said former shipping minister Shajahan Khan pursued the government to manage the award for his father.

The legal notice also mentioned that prominent lawyer Asmat Ali Khan was the founding president of Madaripur district Awami League and led the party for a long 37 years. He rejected “Khan Bahadur” title conferred on him by then British government for his outstanding social work. He returned the title, protesting persecution of people of the sub-continent during British colonial rule.

Meanwhile, freedom fighters of Madaripur at a press conference on Saturday  came down hard on Shahabuddin Molla for making such a derogatory comment and demanded unconditional apology from him. The press conference was held at the district Muktijoddha Sangsad office.
