UP chairman marries 9th grader during arbitration

PATUAKHALI: A union parishad chairman has married an ninth grader girl in Bauphal upazila of the district. The incident took place at Kankadia union on Friday afternoon.

Local sources said Naznin Akter, daughter of Nazrul Islam of Chunarpurl area, had affair with a young man Ramzan of Narayanpasha village.

As Nazrul did not accept that relationship, he complained the matter to local UP chairman Shahin Hawladar.

Later, during a local arbitration on Friday, the chairman proposed Nazrul to marry his daughter Naznin. Nazrul agreed to the proposal and chairman Shahin married the girl after Jum'a prayer.

This is the second marriage of Shahin Hawladar who is the father of two children.

Naznin Akhter was a student of Kankadia Girls School, said Porimol Chandra Shil, headmaster of the school.

Chairman Shahin Hawladar said, “I married the girl as I liked her.”

When asked about the age of bride, Shahin said, "Your sister-in-law’s date of birth is April 21, 2003. She continued her studied up to class IX and then dropped out of school three years ago.”

“I am not ashamed of but happy about the marriage,” he added.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Zakir Hossain said necessary steps would be taken in this regard.

Meanwhile, Ramzan took poison after the marriage. He was admitted to Bauphal Upazila Health Complex on Friday afternoon.
