One held with fake bidi band-roll in Rangpur

RANGPUR: The Customs Excise and VAT Commissionerate, Rangpur arrested a man with 13.80 lakh pieces of fake Bidi band-roll worth Taka 1.39 crore from Gangachara upazila in the district on Thursday.

The arrested man is Ashiqul Islam, 29, son of late Obaidul Haque of village Kartik Maddhyapara under Kawnia upazila in Rangpur.

“On a tip-off, an operational team of the department conducted a raid in Joydeb area of the upazila and held the man with the fake Bidi band-roll,” said Sajjad Hassan, assistant commissioner of the Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate.

“The man was loading 23 packets filled in three sacs containing 13.80 lakh pieces of fake Bidi band-roll on a van for transporting those to other areas when he was arrested red-handed from the spot,” he said.

After filing a case in this connection against the arrested person, the Customs Excise and VAT Commissionerate handed over him to Gangachara Model Police Station for taking legal action.

“Such campaigns will continue in the interest of protection of government revenue,” the official added.
