Research gets low priority yet again

The Dhaka University (DU) authorities on Thursday announced it proposed annual budget of Tk 831.79 crore for the fiscal year 2021-22, keeping only Tk 11.00 crore or 1.32 percent for research.

DU Treasurer Prof Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed presented the proposed budget at the annual Senate session of the university at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban with Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman in the chair.

This year, the size of the budget decreased by Tk 37.77cr than the previous year’s Tk 869.56cr.

According to the new budget, the university will spend 1.80pc of the total budget for salary, 27.01 pc for allowances, 20.20pc for goods and services, 14.76pc for pension and retirement facilities, 2.61pc for capital grant, and 2.30pc for other grants.

Besides, Tk 11.00cr, which is only 1.32pc of the total budget, is allocated for research purposes.

As per the proposed budget, University Grants Commission (UGC) will provide Tk 696.54cr (83.74pc) while Tk 65cr (7.81pc) will come from the university’s internal sources.

As a result, there will be a deficit of Tk 70.25cr (8.45pc) in this fiscal year.

Mentionable, the DU authorities approved a Tk 869.56-crore budget for the fiscal year 2020-21.

The approved budget has a 1.09 percent allocation for researches.

Of the amount, 30.71 percent has been allocated for salary, 24.81percent for allowance, 22.77percent for supply and service expense, 14.38percent for pension and retirement benefits, 3.52percent for capital grant, and 2.72percent for other grants.
