Speakers at a programme said Islam always supports science and modern innovations which are good for humankind.
They made the remark at the closing ceremony of a two-day capacity building programme titled “Role of Imams in Ensuring Food Security through Agricultural Innovations and Application of Agri-biotechnology in Bangladesh” at the Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB) in the capital on Wednesday.More than one hundred Imams, enlisted by the Imam Training Academy, joined the event to interact with scientists, academia, and development partners about modern agricultural innovations, including GMO and crop biotechnology.
Framing Future Bangladesh (FFB) conducted the programme which in turn is expected to generate awareness.
“Our religion always supports science and innovations which are good for human beings,” said Rafiqul Islam, Director (ICT) of Imam Training Academy, Islamic Foundation.
Md Atikur Rahman, Imam of Ganabhaban Mosque, said, “We often discuss scientific issues, including agricultural innovations. Technical sessions of this programme helped me to learn about the benefits of GMO and agri-biotechnology. We should share facts to eradicate wrong information about innovations” he added.
Participants discussed the importance of demystify misinformation about agricultural innovations, specially aligned with the Islamic references.
“FFB strongly believes that Imams are one of the most powerful and reliable influencers who can share evidence of innovations for healthier future,” said Arif Hossain, CEO & Executive Director of Farming Future Bangladesh.“It will be nearly impossible for humans to exist without taking or adopting the agricultural innovations to overcome the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Dr Mohammad Nazrul Islam, associate professor and chairman of the Department of Biotechnology of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University during the technical session of the programme.
Dr AKM Quamruzzaman, principal Scientific Officer of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) and resource person of the programme, shared different aspects and benefits of agri-biotechnology and GMO adoption. He also explained scientific niceties with the participating Imams.
