The production of oil crops in the country has almost doubled in the last 12 years as a result of agri-friendly policy and various incentives taken by the government, Agriculture Minister Dr. Muhammad Abdur Razzaque said on Wednesday.

The minister remarked this while speaking virtually as the chief guest at a national workshop on “Increasing Production of Oilseeds” project from his office room of the Secretariat.

“Our scientists have developed high yielding and short term improved varieties of rice and mustard. If the cultivation of these varieties can be spread and popularised among the farmers quickly then it will be possible to increase the production of oil crops including mustard as an additional crop without reducing the increase in paddy production,” he added.

The production of oil crops was 8, 60,000 tonnes in 2009, it has increased to 11, 54, 000 tonnes in 2020, according to the ministry of Agriculture.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) DG Md Asadullah presided over the programme.

Senior Secretary of Agriculture Ministry Mesbaul Islam, Additional Secretary (planning) Dr. Md Abdur Rauf, Additional Secretary (Extension) Md Hasanuzzaman Kollol, among others, also spoke at the programme.
