A woman allegedly strangled her parents and sister to death after feeding them food mixed with sedative over a family feud at Kadamtali in the capital and informed police of the incident by dialling the national helpline.

The woman named Mehzabin Moon also made her second husband and daughter unconscious feeding them the same food, police said.

The grisly incident took place at a flat of house No. 274/1 on Lalmia Sardar Road on Friday night. Police recovered the bodies of the three and rushed Moon’s husband and daughter to a hospital on Saturday morning after the woman informed police of the matter through the National Emergency Service 999.

The deceased were identified as Masud Rana, 50, his wife Mousumy Islam, 40, and their youngest daughter Jannatul, 20. The injured are Moon’s husband Shafiqul Islam and their daughter Tabassum Tripti, 6. Shafiq and Tripti are now undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

There were also allegations that Moon had involvement in killing her first husband and she suffered in jail for five years for the crime, some of her relatives said.

Shah Iftekhar Ahmed, deputy commissioner of Wari Crime Division under Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), told the Daily Sun that Moon called ‘999’ at about 8:00am on Saturday and said she killed her father, mother and younger sister.

She also threatened to kill her husband and daughter if police did not reach the spot quickly, said the police officer.

He said some policemen were sent to the spot following her call and they recovered the bodies and took Shafiq and Tripti to the hospital.

The police officer said she fed the family members food and tea mixed with sedative on Friday night, aiming to kill all in a pre-planned way.

Police said they came to know two possible reasons behind the incident -- extramarital affairs between Shafiq and Jannatul and another feud over sharing of property.

Police said Moon came to know that her sister developed an extramarital affair with her husband. She complained to her parents about the matter, but they paid no heed to solve the problem. Moon was not going well with her husband Shafiq over the suspicious relation.

Besides, Moon was demanding property from her parents, but they did not give so, police said.

Shila, a cousin of Moon, told reporters that Moon killed her first husband. She, her parents and sister suffered in jail. They got bail after suffering five years in jail.

She also said that two days ago, Moon, her second husband and their daughter came to her father’s house.

Then, she complained to her parents that her younger sister Jannatul had extramarital affairs with her husband. A heated argument ensued among the family members over the matter.

Some neighbours said that Moon was creating pressure on her parents to give the share of their property. Arbitration was also arranged over the matter.

Shafiq told reporters at the DMCH that his wife fed food and tea on Friday night. After eating, he had no sense.
