CHATTOGRAM: Police arrested a top-notch criminal after ‘gunfight’ at a check-post in the city’s Bayezid Link Road on early Thursday.

The arrestee was identified as Saiful Islam alias Burma Saiful, 35, son of Nurul Alam Kosai of Burma Colony under the Bayezid Bostami Police Station.

Officer in-Charge (OC) Md Kamruzzaman of the police station said they set a check-post near the Asian University for Woman (AUW) at around 12:15am. The cops noticed three motorbikes coming from Faujdarhat end and signalled them there.

But two of the bikes managed to flee the scene while two persons attempted to flee leaving another bike at the check-post.

As police chased them, the criminals opened fire prompting the law enforcers to retaliate.

Later, Saiful was found lying in bullet-hit condition at a nearby hill while his cohort managed to flee, said the OC.

A light gun, three rounds of cartridge and three rounds of empty cartridge were recovered from his possession. Three cops -- Sub-Inspector KM Nazibul Islam Tanvir, ASI Md SaifulI slam and Md Rabiul Hossain -- were also injured during the drive.

The injured accused and cops were sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for treatment, he said.
