University Grants Commission (UGC) on Thursday approved a budget of Tk 10,032.81 crore for 49 public universities of the country for 2021-22 fiscal year (FY).
Of this amount, the size of revenue budget is Tk 5,875.81 crore while the development budget is Tk 4,157 crore for the upcoming FY.
The commission approved the budget at its 160th meeting held virtually with UGC Chairman Professor Kazi Shahidullah in the chair, said a UGC press release
In the outgoing fiscal year of 2020-21, the UGC had approved a budget of Tk 8,485 crore for the public universities where the size of revenue budget was Tk 5,454.12 crore and the development budget was Tk 3,031 crore.
Of the universities, Dhaka University got the highest amount of budget allocation while the newly established Habiganj Agricultural University the lowest this year.
UGC also allocated Tk 100.74 crore for the research purpose at the public universities for 2021-22 FY, increasing Tk 34 crore than the outgoing fiscal year. The allocation for research was Tk 66.65 crore in 2020-21 FY.
Meanwhile, the UGC also approved Tk 61.36 crore for its own as budgetary allocation for the 2021-22 FY. The amount was Tk 62.95 crore in the outgoing FY.
About the allocation for research, UGC chief Prof Kazi Shahidullah said Bangladesh is now a developing country while the government is also committed to make Bangladesh one of the developed countries by 2041.
