Bangladesh government has extended 5.32 million Special drawing rights (SDR) or Tk 650 million debt relief support to debt-ridden Sudan to help it come out of debt.

The government provided the money on Tuesday following the call of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), a press release of the finance ministry said Wednesday.

The government hopes that this funding to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member country will further strengthen Sudan's struggle for poverty alleviation, it said.

Last year, as part of the IMF's initiative, Bangladesh also provided more than Tk 8 crore, equivalent to an SDR of 0.70 million, to alleviate poverty in the African country of Somalia.
