Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Tuesday said some 1000 Awami League leaders and activists died due to coronavirus infections.
“All party leaders and activists were involved in humanitarian services during the Covid-19 pandemic as per the directives of Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Some 1000 leaders and activists have already died due to the deadly virus,” he said.Hasan, also the joint general secretary, said this while addressing a memorial meeting organised by Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote marking the first death anniversary of former health minister and AL presidium member Muhammad Nasim at Jatiya Press Club in the capital.
The minister said five leaders out of 81 Awami League central working committee members died due to the deadly bug for their involvement in public service.
Talking about Nasim’s work and life, Hasan said the veteran AL leader did not sit idle amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“He (Nasim) along with party leaders and activists distributed relief among the poor and inquire after leaders and activists regularly,” he said.
The minister also recalled Nasim’s contribution to organise the 14-party alliance.
AL office secretary Biplab Barua, Nasim’s son Tanvir Shakil Joy, among others, addressed the function on the occasion.
