Govt distributes 24,359 tonnes of rice in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI: As part of its continuous humanitarian support to tackle the present pandemic situation, the government has, so far, distributed 24,359.27 tonnes of rice and Taka 15.24 crore in cash among the needy families in Rajshahi division, reports BSS.

Around 32.34 lakh hardest hit and other worst-affected families have received the humanitarian assistance to overcome their livelihood related difficulties being triggered by the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

Dr Humayun Kabir, commissioner of Rajshahi Division, said 21,13,719 families were given 24,359 tonnes of rice and each of the beneficiary families got 10 kilograms of rice free of cost since the pandemic began early last year.

Another 11,20,297 families got Taka 1,000 each for purchasing baby food and necessary essentials in all eight districts of the division on Sunday. A total of 750.58 tonnes of rice and over Taka 6.61 lakh in cash are in the stock at present for distribution, he said.

On the other hand, the Department of Food has distributed 9,796.94 tonnes of rice at subsidised rate under the government’s Open Market Sale (OMS) programme through 56 appointed dealers in all eight districts in the division till Sunday last.

The department also sold 14,389.13 tonnes of flour at a reduced rate among the less-income group families to mitigate their crisis caused by the pandemic.

Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) has also distributed foodstuffs among the distressed Covid-19 infected patients in the city areas, RCC sources said.

It has also distributed 1,394.85 tonnes of rice, Taka 48.12 lakh in cash and 145 cartons of baby food among the badly virus affected families as part of the government aid to handle the present troubled situation.

Besides, the city corporation has also distributed 239.80 tonnes of rice among 31,324 people of 157 organisations as the gift of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and as a part of the government’s instant humanitarian support to relieve the livelihood related hardship.

The city corporation distributed various types of foodstuffs which include 325.33 tonnes of rice, 58.68 tonnes of pulse, 58.45 tonnes of potato, 15.08 tonnes of flour, 17 tonnes of fine and aromatic rice, 11.2 tonnes of sugar, 11,250 packets of vermicelli, 39 tonnes of pumpkin and 4.52 tonnes of spinach.
