Contracted potato-seed farmers urged the government to save Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) potato-seed department and to provide higher price for their potato seeds.

BADC Contract Potato-seed Farmers Central Forum president Ruhul Amin Milon came up with this demand at a press conference at the National Press Club in the capital on Monday.

Leaders of the forum claimed that some officers have made a conspiracy to hand over state owned organisation to private company.

Out of 7 lakh tonne Potato seeds, only 35000 tonne have been bought from contracted farmers and rest of the seeds have been collected from private companies, they added.

The officers helped private companies to carry on their business by blaming BADC’s seed as low quality. The forum demanded to withdraw one-sided agreement and proposed to form memorandum of understanding between farmers and BADC.

The leaders also demanded to fix potato seed price at Tk 37.50 a kg, to set up Potato seed price fixing committee with seven members of the BADC contracted Potato Seed farmers forum’s central council including the council’s president and general secretary, to keep Farmers’ forum members in all procedure of production and collection of seed from BADC’s firm, to clear payment within seven days after collecting seeds.
