Six get bullet injuries in Noakhali clash

NOAKHALI: At least 10 people, including four police men, were injured in a clash between police and Awami League activists in Companiganj upazila of the district on Saturday afternoon, the first day of 48-hour non-stop hartal.

Six people received bullet injuries are AL leader Fakhrul Islam Sabuj, 55, his son Chayon, 20, his nephew Arian, 23, Hridoy, 28, Faruque, 35, and two others.

The upazila AL unit enforced the hartal demanding the arrest of Basurhat municipality mayor Abdul Quader Mirza, younger brother of Road Transport and Bridges Minister and AL general secretary Obaidul Quader.

Quoting locals, Companiganj Police Station inspector Md Abul Kalam Azad said the supporters of the upazila’s former chairman Mizanur Rahman Badal blocked Bashurhat-Peshkarhat road at Teker Bazar. Being informed, police went there and tried to remove the protesters to clear the road that triggered the clash.

At one stage, police charged batons to disperse them. At that time, 10 people were injured. Six of them sustained bullet injuries.

Earlier on Saturday morning, Badal came under attack allegedly carried out by the supporters of Quader Mirza.

Protesting the matter, the upazila unit AL called the 48-hour-long hartal.
