CHATTOGRAM: Members of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Chattogram Metropolitan Police arrested a Syria-returnee on charges of involvement with the banned militant group Ansar al-Islam from city’s Khulshi area on Friday, reports BSS.
The arrestee was identified as Shakhawat Ali alias Lalu, 40, son of Shamser Ali and also an IT specialist of Ansar al-Islam, who hail from Shamser Ali Bari at WASA crossing in the city. CTTC members seized a book, a passport, tabs, mobile phones and laptop from him. “Lalu went to Syria from Bangladesh four years ago. He has returned to the country in March,” police sources said.Sub-inspector (SI) of CTTC Rashib Khan filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act against the militant.
According to CTTC sources, Sakhawat Ali Lalu became involved in the militant activities of the banned organisation Ansar al-Islam through his relative Arif Mamun in 2012. Lalu confessed before the law enforcers about his involvement with Ansar al-Islam.
He was arrested following a raid on his arrival in Chattogram from Syria. During interrogation, some information was extracted from him, the SI added.
