The Dockyard and Engineering Works Ltd (DEW) run by Bangladesh Navy in Narayanganj held an official keel-laying ceremony for 10 12-tonne bollard pull tugboats of BIWTA in Narayanganj on Saturday.

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury was present as the chief guest while Shipping Ministry Secretary Mohammad Mezbah Uddin Chowdhury as the special guest at the event.

DEW’s officers, employees and workers including members of the board of directors, managing director, senior military and civil officers were present on the occasion.

Each of these under construction tugboat is 28 meters long, 8.5 meters wide and can travel at a speed of 11 nautical miles per hour.

Earlier, an agreement was signed between BIWTA and DEW on May 23, 2021 for the construction of tugboats.

International standard tugboat construction is a significant day for our country’s shipbuilding organisation. As a result, the efficiency and capacity of domestic industries will increase and it will play a special role in the national economy.

In the past, Bangladesh had to take the help of foreign companies to make such boats.
