CHATTOGRAM: An assistant sub inspector (ASI) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) was killed and a constable was injured after a microbus carrying liquors hit them to avoid checking in the city’s Chandgaon area on Friday.

The deceased was identified as ASI Kazi Md Salauddin, 38, while the injured was Constable Md Masum of Chandgaon Police Station. Sources said that ASI Salauddin had been on night duty in Maulavi Pukurpar, C&B and adjacent areas under Chandgaon Police Station.

On receiving information, Salauddin and his driver Masum signaled the black microbus carrying local liquor from the hill tracts in front of Meheraj Khan Ghata Petrol Pump under the police station around 4:00am. The microbus slowed down and the duo cops went forward to check it. But, the driver suddenly picked up the speed and the vehicle hit Salauddin and Masum while Salauddin fell to one side of the road receiving injuries in his head, back and other parts of the body.  The duo was rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital where doctors declared Salauddin dead, said ASI Shilabrata Barua of the hospital police outpost.

Injured constable Masum is undergoing treatment at the hospital, he said.

Officer in-Charge (OC) Mustafizur Rahman of Chandgaon Police Station said the microbus was seized while its driver and helper fled the scene.

They also recovered around 730 liters of local liquor from the abandoned vehicle, he said.

The body of Salauddin was sent to his village home Dakkhin Jaipur under Sadar Police Station in Lakshimipur district after a Namaz-e-janaza on the CMP Headquarters premises in the city’s Dampara area, said the OC.

Filing of a case in this connection is underway and the drive is ongoing to arrest the driver and others, he added.
