Dysfunctional escalators irk elderly, disabled

Newly-installed escalators of Abarar Memorial Footbridge at Pragoti Sarani in the capital remain off most of the time, causing sufferings for ill, elderly and physically challenged persons.   

Regular users of the footbridge said the discontinuation of the escalators is causing immense sufferings for them.

On March 19, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam opened the new escalators of the footbridge.

He said the escalators were installed for the movement of elderly and physically challenged persons.  Recently, the correspondent visited the footbridge on several occasions and found the escalator off.

Md Siddique, a hawker on the footbridge said, “The escalators in the both side of the foot-over remain off most of the time.”

The correspondent talked to one Saddam Hossain who introduced himself as the lift operator.

He said that he was not operating the escalators over the salary issue.

 “I was operating the escalators since the installation but recently engineers of Dhaka North City Corporation asked me to abstain from the job over a salary dispute. Earlier, the contractor company that installed the escalator paid my salary.”

He also said that he resigned from the contracting company to work as DNCC lift operator but DNCC are not responding well. 

Talking to the Daily Sun DNCC assistant engineer Md Saiful Islam said, “There has no technical problem in the escalators but some street children may be creating problem. We have launched auto motion of the escalator of round the clock but the street children are creating trouble in absence of guard.”

Executive Engineer of Traffic Engineering Circle Md Farhad said that he was not aware of the matter and he was fixing the problem.
