Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Friday said the day of Sheikh Hasina’s release from prison is actually ‘a day of free democracy’.

“Democracy was shackled by arresting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The confined democracy was set free through the release of Sheikh Hasina from jail on June 11, 2008 due to the spontaneous movement of the people,” he said.

The minister made the remark while addressing a discussion organised by Swechchhasebak League in the capital’s Kalabagan playground, marking Sheikh Hasina’s release day from prison.

Mentioning that Sheikh Hasina has become prime minister for fourth time, Hasan said she assumed power through securing landslide victory in 2008 national election, following the path of the movement for releasing Sheikh Hasina from jail.

“The people have given Awami League the mandate for running the country three times in a row and Sheikh Hasina becomes prime minister for the fourth time,” he said.

Highlighting the significance of the day, the minister said Bangladesh has been able to secure a dignified position in the world under the leadership of Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina as the people gave the responsibility of running the country after releasing her from the jail in 2008.

Mentioning it is an achievement of 50-year of Independence of the country that Pakistan is upset over witnessing development spree of Bangladesh, Hasan said that Bangladesh exceeded Pakistan in all development indexes. “When Pakistan Prime Minister vowed to make Pakistan as like Sweden in next 10 years, its people asked their premier to take their country to the position of Bangladesh instead of Sweden in the 10 years,” he said.

The minister said Bangladesh also exceeded neighbouring India in social and human indexes and per capita income.

“Our progress is being discussed in India, while they are lauding the role of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina too,” he said.

Swechchasebak League president Nirmal Ranjan Guha presided over the meeting while its general secretary AKM Afzalur Rahman Babu conducted the discussion.
