Miracles of Jesus and their lessons

We live in an age of science when people do not believe in things that are not empirically verifiable. At the outset let this be said that the subject of Jesus’ miracles is of supreme importance for Christianity as a faith. And this article is too short and too modest to deal with this issue. More discussion will be necessary in the future.

We need first of all to know the person who did the miracles that are recorded in the Bible, the New Testament by the four different evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. They recorded as many as 37 miraculous deeds of Jesus Christ. Jesus himself said about who he was and about his miracles in the four Gospels. As for example, we find that he said: ‘the Father who dwells in me does His works.’ The root of the issue is that Jesus Christ is God-incarnate. He came to dwell in his creation and also to manifest his divine authority and power in this world.

The New Testament Greek word used is ‘dunamis’ from which the English language has the word ‘power’ to mean miracle, which manifests the ‘power’ that does the miraculous work, which is beyond the explanation of physical science (Luke 8:46). The word dynamite comes from this. This word may also be translated as ‘ability’ or ‘powerful work’ (Matthew 11:20; 25:15). It is used to mean the mighty work and also the power by which the mighty work is done, the power, which is from God working in the created order or physical world. Another word used is ‘teras’, which is translated ‘potent’ or ‘wonder’ (John 4:48; Acts 2:19). The Greek word is ‘Semeion’ means a sign. This is to imply the truth that Jesus’ miracles are the obvious signs of God working in Jesus. There are miracles of different types: there are miracles of healing from different kinds of diseases and illness; there are natural miracles manifesting the power and authority of Jesus over nature and its forces; and there are miracles of deaths—both physical and spiritual. Jesus is the Messiah (Hebrew ‘Masach’; Greek ‘Christos’) who was promised in the Old Testament. The Messiah was to be the liberator of people under the control of Satan. Jesus came to liberate them from all physical, mental and spiritual bondages. Man needs to believe in him and follow his teaching. Jesus came to this world not only to preach the word of God’s love for this fallen world, but also to manifest that in works of power. Jesus Christ, the eternal divine word came to this world to manifest his power working in Jesus within humanity. God sent his only begotten son to manifest his love, grace, power and authority. He did so to real human needs. They also are signs that God’s rule or kingdom on earth can be a reality. John 14:10 records what Jesus told Philip, one of his disciples, “Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves.” Jesus also said, “Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:30-31).

It will be meaningful to give a list of the miracles that Jesus did which are recorded by the four evangelists.  So here it is:
