Bangladesh’s dream to end the 22-year win drought against neighboring India was shattered as they conceded a 2-0 goals defeat in the second leg match of the joint qualifiers for FIFA World Cup 2022 and AFC Asian Cup 2023 at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium on Monday night.

Indian captain cum forward Sunil Chhetri scored twice utilising Bangladesh’s defencive errors in the 79th and 89th minutes.

The men in red and green came close to ending their win drought in the first leg match at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata in 2019 as they were leading the game 1-0 till the 88th minute after a goal from their forward Saad Uddin, but Indian defender Adil Khan equalised in the 89th minute only to increase Bangladesh’s wait.

With the feat, India reached the third position in Group E with 6 points from one win and two draws while Bangladesh remained at the bottom place with their previous two points from two draws. India also created a chance for a direct place in the third round of Asian Cup qualifiers.
