Agriculture Minister Dr. Muhammad Abdur Razzaque said a development project is going to be launched to expand mushroom cultivation across the country.
“The potential for cash crop mushroom cultivation in the country is much higher. This possibility must be utilized to the maximum,” said the minister at a views exchange meeting as the chief guest on Sunday.He said, “improved varieties and cultivation techniques of mushrooms have already been invented. Now there is a need to rapidly expand and popularise it at the farmer and entrepreneurial level. The work is underway to adopt a development project.”
The country’s mushroom growers and entrepreneurs from across the country also joined the meeting at the Mushroom Development Institute in Savar. Mentioning different initiatives taken by the current government, Dr. Razzaque said, “Agri-friendly policies and various incentives of the present government brought wonderful success in agriculture in the last 12 years.”
“The country is now self-sufficient in food today. The government's goal is now to commercialise agriculture and make it profitable and ensure nutritious food for all. In this case, there is a lot of potential for mushrooms cultivation,” the minister said.
According to him, the mushroom farming could play a big role in the economy of Bangladesh, if it is expanded and popularized.
Mushroom production is growing rapidly and about 40,000 metric tons of mushrooms are being produced in the country every year with a financial value of around Tk 800 crore, according to the Mushroom Development Institute.
About one and a half lakh people have been involved in the production and marketing of mushrooms and mushroom products. On the other hand, almost all the economically prosperous countries of the world import mushrooms. Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) DG Md. Asadullah presided over the session, also joined, among others, by State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr Md Enamur Rahman, Additional Secretary (extension) at the Ministry of Agriculture Md Hazanuzzaman, chairman of Savar Upazila Parishad Manjurul Alam Rajib.
