The allegations of rape against Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh leader Mamunul Haque by Jannat Ara Jharna are true, police said.

“We have looked into the rape attaching utmost importance. We have interrogated Mamunul in this connection. The rape allegation by Jharna is true,” said Jayedul Alam, superintendent of police (SP) of Narayanganj, at a press conference at his office Sunday afternoon.

On April 30, Jannat Ara Jharna filed a rape case against Mamunul at Sonargaon Police Station in Narayanganj.

The SP said that having sexual relations with someone by making false promises of marriage is considered rape according to the law of the land. Mamunul also confessed to the rape, he said, adding that they would submit a report before the court soon. On April 3, some local people caught Mamunul with Jharna in a room of Royal Resort of Sonargaon.

At that time, both Mamunul and Jharna claimed that they were husband and wife. On April 27, police found Jharna at a house owned by Mamunul’s sister in the capital’s Mohammadpur and handed her over to her family members.
