HC orders suspension of principal, hostel super

The High Court has directed the authorities concerned to suspend the principal of MC College in Sylhet and hostel superintendent within seven days for their failure to save a woman from being raped on the campus last year.

The HC asked for execution of the order suspending principal Prof Mohammad Saleh Ahmed and hostel superintendent Jiban Krishna Acharaya within seven days.

A Division Bench comprising Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Md Kamrul Hossain Mollah passed the order on Wednesday.

The HC disposed off a suo muto rule issued over gang-rape which took place in Murari Chand College hostel on September 25, last year.

The court also asked the law secretary, the vice-chancellor and registrar of National University to initiate departmental proceedings against Saleh Ahmed and Jiban Krishna in accordance with the law.

Acting on the newspaper report, the HC, on September 29, issued rule asking the authorities to explain as to why appropriate steps shall not be taken college principal and hostel superintendent for the incident.

A group of youth tied up husband of the woman and raped her at a dormitory of MC College on September 25, last year.

Later, husband filed a case at Shahporan Police Station against nine people mentioning the names of six.

Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Md Mohitul Haque accepted charge-sheet against eight youths on January 13 and indicted them on January 17.

On March 7, the government transferred the case to Speedy Trial Tribunal. The ministry concerned published a gazette notification in this regard.
