Midfielder Ibrahim joins team in Qatar

Midfielder Md Ibrahim left Dhaka for Qatar on Monday morning to join the national team as he tested negative after recovering from the COVID-19, confirmed by Bangladesh Football Federation.

Bashundhara Kings' midfielder was tested positive for COVID-19 on May 19 and failed to fly with the team last Friday. He had been quarantined since that day. Forward Mahbubur Rahman Sufil, who was also reported COVID-19 positive, is yet to be recovered.

However, both Ibrahim and Sufil were picked up in the final squad of 35-member. The men in red and green will play three matches of FIFA, AFC joint qualifiers against Afghanistan on June 3, India on June 7 and Oman on June 15, at a centralised venue -- Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha.

Ibrahim will start practice with the team today. However, the national side held recovery and gym sessions on Monday. Assistant coach Stuart Watkiss said that the team is fully fit and working hard to complete their final preparations.

“We have completed a recovery session and gym this morning (Monday). They (players) trained very hard yesterday afternoon in very warm temperatures. We had a very good session, lots of organisational drills, lots of build-up play and a small practice match at the end of the session,” he said.

“We have two more proper practice sessions, two more football practice sessions before the big game against Afghanistan on Thursday. We are getting better prepared each day. We hope to give a very good counter ourselves against the team that ranked 40 or 45 places above us. It is going to be a tough challenge for us. We are looking forward to it. Hopefully, we can get a good result,” Stuart added.
