Students of Dhaka University (DU) staged a protest on the university campus on Sunday demanding reopening of educational institutions and residential halls throughout the country in compliance with health guidelines.

Under the banner of "Student-Teacher Rally", the students demonstrated near Raju Memorial Sculpture. Later, they gathered in front of the residence of the Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman.

At the protest rally, the students asked Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni if she doesn’t see how the students are distancing themselves from study.

They also alleged that there is a conspiracy behind the closure of educational institutions for a long period of time.

No news of death of any students of Dhaka University was heard due to Covid-19. But 39 students of different universities, including 11 from Dhaka University, committed suicide due to session jam and frustration which arose out of closure of the universities, they said.

They said keeping everything open except educational institutions is completely unreasonable. They want to go back to campus as soon as possible, they said.

On the other hand, several teachers expressed their solidarity with demonstrating students.

Meanwhile, students of seven affiliated colleges under DU also staged a human chain demanding the announcement of a roadmap to reopen their colleges following health rules.

The programme was held at Nilkhet intersection in the capital.
