A Dhaka court on Saturday granted a three-day remand to five accused for allegedly gang-raping a 22-year woman on a running minibus at Ashulia in Savar on the outskirts of the capital.
Ziaul Islam, investigation officer of the case, produced five out of the six accused before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate and appealed for a five-day remand.After the hearing, the court granted a three-day remand for grilling.
Besides, the court recorded the confessional statement of another accused Md Suman. The police on Friday arrested six rapists.
Ashulia Police Station Inspector Ziaul Islam told reporters that hearing the scream of the woman, a patrol team of police arrested the rapists, including the driver and helper of the bus, at 11:00pm on Friday by stopping the bus.
The police rescued the victim and seized the bus.
The arrestees are Md Ariyan, 18, Md Saju, 20, Monowar Hossain, 24, Sumon Mia, 24, Sohag, 25, and Saiful Islam, 40. Most of them work at garment factories situated beside Abdullahpur-Baipail-Nabinagar highway.
Sazzad Karim, officer-in-charge of Highway Police Station, on Saturday said that the victim, a garment factory worker, went to Manikganj from Chashara of Narayanganj on Friday morning.In the evening, she boarded a Narayanganj-bound bus. When the bus reached Nabinagar in Ashulia, the woman and her acquaintance got off and boarded a minibus to reach Narayanganj.
“The six accused were already on the bus. The driver suddenly stopped the bus near DC Nursery and tied up the woman and her male acquaintance with a rope. Later, they took turns to rape her,” the OC said. However, the girl showed her presence of mind and raised an alarm. Hearing her screams, a police patrol team confronted the accused and rescued her from their clutches. “All the six have been arrested,” the officer said.
An FIR for rape has been filed at Ashulia Police Station against the accused, on a complaint by the woman, the OC said.
