BAGERHAT: Four deer have drowned in the tidal water caused by the cyclonic storm Yaas at Sundarbans in the district.

Two of them have been recovered from the Sundarbans while two others from the locality along the forest.

Muhammad Belayet Hossain, divisional forest officer of Sundarbans east division, confirmed the matter on Thursday morning.

He said the waters in rivers and canals of the Sundarbans increased several feet above and flooded the country’s only mangrove forest.

Some 19 jetties, six boats, two watch towers, 24 deck roads and 10 offices in the East Sundarbans were also damaged by the tidal surge.

Salty water entered nine ponds of fresh water, leaving scarcity for drinking water in the area.

However, the forest department formed four committees to estimate the extent of the damages caused by the cyclone, he added.

Meanwhile, local cautionary signal number three was issued in the coastal district as the cyclonic storm “Yaas” weakened into a deep depression.
