By-polls to 3 Constituencies

AL leaders lobby for party tickets

Leaders of the ruling Awami League are lobbying the party high-ups to secure party tickets for upcoming by-elections to three constituencies: Cumilla-5, Dhaka-14 and Sylhet-3.

The aspirants of the ruling party are passing busy time to carry out campaign in their respective constituency to draw attention of the party policymakers, although the election date is yet to be announced.

Owing to the fact, the ruling party has already taken necessary preparation including sale of nomination forms and holding nomination board meeting as there is a possibility to announce election schedule in the first week of June and the elections to these constituencies are likely to be held in July next.

Recently, Election Commission hinted at announcing election schedule for three constituencies which fell vacant after death of ruling party lawmakers Abdul Matin Khasru in Cumilla-14 on April 14, Aslamul Haque in Dhaka-14 on April 4 and Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury in Sylhet-3 March 11.

Apart from these three constituencies, there is a possibility to hold the by-election to Laxmipur-2 constituency as the election was postponed due to surge of coronavirus pandemic. The Laxmipur-2 constituency fell vacant on January 26 as a Kuwaiti court announced verdict against Kazi Shahidul Islam Papul for human trafficking. EC Secretary Humayun Kabir Khandaker told the media on Monday that the election schedules for the by-polls will be finalized at a meeting of commission on June 2.

“The commission will take decision on holding by-polls to the vacant parliamentary seats of Laxmipur-2, Sylhet-3, Dhaka-14 and Comilla-5,” he said.

Dozens of aspirants from the Awami League and its associate bodies of these constituencies are contacting the local people and leaders of the party along with distributing foods and financial assistance to the voters.

The areas under the constituencies have been covered up the election related materials including banners, posters and festoons.

In Dhaka-14 constituency, Aslam’s wife Masuda Haque expressed her interest to contest by-polls to fulfill her husband’s unfinished work and memoir.

Dhaka north AL general secretary SM Mannan Kochi, General Secretary of Jubo League Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, president of Dhaka Metropolitan north Jubo Mohila League and former lawmaker in women reserve seat Sabina Akter Tuhin are the most compatible candidates.

General Secretary of Juba League Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil told the Daily Sun that people of the Dhaka-14 wants to see me as a candidate of this area.

“If Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina nominate me then I will contest in the polls,” he said.

Besides, former student leader Kazi Faridul Haque Happy, Dhaka Metropolitan North Awami League organizing secretary Mizanur Rahman Mizan and former general secretary if Mirpur Bangla College and president of Dhaka Metropolitan BCL north President ABM Mazharul Anam and Swachchasebak League central joint general secretary Mobashwer Chowdhury also carrying out campaign and lobbying with the high-ups.

President of Dhaka Metropolitan north Jubo Mohila League Sabina Akter Tuhin told that she never left the political field amid deprivation of nomination for several times.

“I will continue to work for the people of the area. I hope the party will value my past dedication,” she said.

In Cumilla-5 constituency, four family members of the late Matin Khasru are interested to contest the by-polls. They are: Matin Khasru’s wife Selina Sobhan Khasru, son Muneef Wasif, daughter Dr. Umme Habiba Dilshad Munmun and brother Abdul Momin Ferdous.

Besides, assistant secretary of Jubo League and former Bangladesh Chhatra League joint general secretary Ahtasamul Hasan Bhuiyan Rumi, Cumilla district south unit AL joint general secretary Sajjad Hossain, Burichang Upazila AL president Abul Hashem, Burichang Upazila AL vice-president Al Amin, Burichang Upazila chairman Akhlaq Haider, principal Selim Reza Sourav, Brahmanpara Upazila AL president and former Upazila chairman Jahangir Khan Chowdhury and Brahmanpara Upazila AL general secretary Abdul Bari, among others, are in the race.

Assistant secretary of Jubo League and former BCL joint general secretary Ahtasamul Rumi told Daily Sun that getting party tickets depend on Awami League president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s blessings.

He is eyeing for the ticket for Cumilla-5 constituency, vacated at the death of Abdul Matin Khasru.

“I have been trying to woo the voters by visiting every door. If I get the party ticket, I will put my best effort to change the fate of the people of my constituency,” he said.

In Sylhet-3, Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury’s wife Farzana Samad Chowdhury also wanted to participate in the by polls.

AL former organizing secretary Mesbah Uddin Siraj, secretary general of Bangladesh Medical Association Dr Ehtashamul Haque Chowdhury Dulal, relief affair secretary of United Kingdom AL Habibur Rahman Habib, Sylhet-2 former lawmaker and former general secretary of Sylhet district Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury,  Sylhet district AL vice-president Nizam Uddin and treasurer Shamser Jamal, Balaganj Upazila Parishad chairman Mostakur Rahman, South Surma Upazila chairman Abu Zahid, among others, will seek nomination from the party.
