The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police arrested four members of a gang that stole vehicles and returned them to their owners in exchange for a hefty sum of money.

The four -- Sohel, 27, Rubel, 30, Monir Hossain, 40, and Mohammad Azizul, 23, -- were nabbed from Demra in the capital, Cumilla, Narayanganj and Faridpur on Sunday. Three stolen pick-ups were also recovered from them.

Kamrul Ahsan, additional DIG of the CID, disclosed the information at a briefing at the CID headquarters in the capital on Monday.

The officer said the four stole about 20 vehicles, including pickups, from different parts of the country during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

When drivers went to eat food parking their vehicles by the side of the road, the members of the gang unlocked them with a master key and drove them to safe places, he said.

Afterwards, the criminals called owners of the vehicles collecting their phone numbers and demanded a big amount of money in exchange for returning the vehicles.

If the owners paid money, their vehicles were given back, but if they did not, the vehicles were sold.
