“Help Desk” under the supervision of Ward Councilors has been making special contribution to solve problems of the urban poor in the capital.
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) 25 number Ward Councilor Anawarul Iqbal Shantu heard the people’s problems during a help desk meeting on Monday and solved some of their problems immediately.He also asked the authorities concerned to take necessary measures to resolve the remaining problems as soon as possible.
He said, “The idea of listening and solving people’s problems is new in the city area. Local people will now be able to place their problems to the help desk on a specific date.”
“I can hear the problem directly from the citizen and will take measures to resolve those,” he added.
Project Coordinator of RIC SMA Muyeed said, “We have taken the initiative to create a platform to report the problems of the urban poor with the help of the European Union. As a part of this initiative, a 'help desk' system has been introduced in the ward councilor's office.”
“All citizens can never get services properly. At the same time, the service providing agencies also never behave equally to the poor people. After opening the desk, the poor people are getting chance to complain directly and get services,” he said.
Two non-government organizations--Solidarity International (SI) and Resource Integration Center (RIC) -- are jointly implementing the project in eight wards under the two city corporation with the financial and technical support from Slum Based Citizen Action Network (SCAN) of the European Union (EU).In this way the people of the area are benefiting as they can directly talk to their public representatives to solve their problems.
On one or more specific days of the month, the ward councilor will only sit down with low-income people and solve their various problems.
