Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the train service titled ‘Mango Special Train’ virtually from her Ganabhaban residence in the capital on May 27.

Bangladesh Railway (BR) introduced the service last year for the smooth and affordable transport of mangoes.

In addition to transport of mangoes, the special train will also carry vegetables, seasonal fruits, including lychee, and other agricultural products at a low cost from northern part of the country to the selling hubs in Dhaka, Chattogram and other areas.

“We are going to start the special train service for mangoes from May 27. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the train service. It will run between Dhaka and Chapainawabganj via Rajshahi,” said Mihir Kanti Guha, West Zone General Manager of the BR.

Transport of mangoes by the special train will cost Tk 1.17 per Kg from Rajshahi to Dhaka and Tk 1.30 from Chapainawabganj to Dhaka whereas courier services cost Tk 20 per Kg, sources said.

The train is scheduled to leave Chapainawabganj at 4:30pm every day and after a stopover in Rajshahi around 6:30pm, it is expected to reach Kamalapur Railway Station in the capital at 2:00am after nine and a half hours of journey.

The move had been made last year for the first time to transport mangoes at a lower cost for welfare of the mango traders and farmers amid the Covid-19 pandemic situation.

The cargo train will carry maximum 150 tonnes of mangoes in its five wagons every day. So, farmers and traders can transport goods at their will.

The BR has earned Tk 9.30 lakh revenue by transporting 857 tonnes of mango, lychee and other agricultural products.
