The students, student organizations and administration of Dhaka University (DU) demanded a proper investigation into the mysterious death of the university’s student Hafizur Rahman, whose body was found in the morgue of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) with his throat slit on Sunday.

On Monday, a group of students formed a human chain at the foot of Raju Memorial Sculpture on the university campus demanding justice for Hafizur.

Besides, several student organizations including Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, Bangladesh Chhatra Union and Chhatra Odhikar Parishad issued statements demanding a quick probe into the death.

DU Vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman expressed his condolences for the ‘unnatural death’ of the student. He requested the law enforcement agencies concerned to submit an investigation report as quickly as possible.

Hafizur, a student of 2015-16 session of the university’s Information Science and Library Management Department, went missing on May 15.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station Mamunur Rashid quoted witnesses as saying that Hafizur stabbed his throat with a machete near the DMCH main gate, which is adjacent to the Central Shaheed Minar, on the night of May 15. Hafizur reportedly took the sharp weapon from a coconut seller there.

Afterwards, a team of Shahbagh police on patrol whisked him off to DMCH, but he died on the operating table, said the OC.

As police could not identify the youth at the time, his body was kept at the DMCH morgue. According to his family, Hafizur returned to Dhaka from Brahmanbaria on May 15, a day after the Eid, and informed his family that he reached safely.

However, from the night of May 15, his family found his phone switched off.

After failing to communicate with him, they filed a general diary at Brahmanbaria’s Kasba Police Station.

Later, Shahbagh police was informed about Hafizur’s disappearance.

On Sunday, Shahbagh police informed his brother Habibur about an unidentified body at the DMCH morgue.

Habibur rushed to the morgue and identified his brother’s body.
