17 members of 5 youth gangs held

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested 17 members of five youth and teenage gangs in the capital’s Wari and Mohammadpur areas on Saturday.

Several teams of RAB-10 and RAB-2 in separate drives held them, said two press releases on Sunday.

A team of the RAB-10 held Shamsul Haque Hridoy, 24, Murad Hossain, 23, Akbar Hossain Sohel, 24, Mohammad Ripon, 27, Akbar Hossain, 30, and Rakib, 23, from Joy Kali  Temple and Captan Bazar in Wari at about 8:40 pm.

Two switch gear knives, three ramdas (big knives), four mobile phones and Tk 1,240 in cash were seized from them.

They are members of youth gangs -- ‘Pichchi Hridoy Group’, ‘Murad Group’, and ‘Akbar Group’.

According to the press release, they targeted commuters in thinly populated areas and robbed them of their valuables.

They were also involved in drug trade, eve-teasing, and other forms of crimes. On the other hand, RAB-2 nabbed 11 members of two teenage gangs – ‘Patali Group’ and ‘Alex Emon Group’ from Aziz Khan Road and Embankment Road areas in Mohammadpur.

They are Shariful Islam alias Pial, 22, Ali Hossain, 19, Chand Mia, 19, Rabbi Islam alias Akash, 16, Roni Khan, 14, Arif Hossain alias Rifat, 14,  Mohammad Abir, 13,  Mohammad Rony, 16,  Mohammad Sagor, 15, Mohammad Rayhan, 16, and Rabiul Islam, 15, Sharp weapons were seized from them.
