Sumon Bepari, one of the prime accused of Pallabi’s Shahinuddin murder case, on Saturday confessed that he led the killing mission as per directive of former lawmaker MA Awal.

During police remand, Sumon also said he along with 11 others took part in the killing mission, said sources in police.

Sumon, former assistant secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan North Unit of Chhatra League, detailed everything from the plot to implementation of the gruesome murder with the exact reason behind it to policemen.

On May 16, some miscreants hacked Shahin, 33, to death in broad daylight in front of his six-year-old son at a garage in Pallabi. On Thursday, RAB and police arrested former MP of Laxmipur-1 constituency Awal, Sumon and some others for their involvement in the killing. RAB said Awal directed Sumon and some others to kill Shahin regarding a dispute over a piece of land at Alinagar of the area. After their arrest, they were taken on remand. On Friday, one of the killers named Manik, 32, was killed in a “gunfight” with Rapid Action Battalion in Eastern Housing area of Pallabi.

During the remand, Sumon said that Shahin was once the fellow of the former MP. But Awal and his relation got worsened when Shahin was trying to get back a piece of land at Alinagar they gave to Awal for development, said the sources.

Besides, Shahin was helping a retired army major who has a dispute with Awal over a piece of land there, according to the sources.

On the other hand, Awal did not confess to his involvement in the killing during the first day remand.

Manas Kumar Poddar, deputy commissioner (Mirpur Detective Branch) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told the Daily Sun that they were interrogating Awal and hoped that they would congregate important information from him.

Meanwhile, allegations of negligence were raised against Pallabi police as they did not take proper action against Awal and his cadre groups—‘Sumon Group,’ ‘Dipu Group,’ ‘Rajon Group’ and ‘Abul Group’ though a big number complaints were lodged against them with the police.

Before the plot at Awal’s Kalabagan office to kill Shahin a few days ago, Awal made another plot in November last year for the same purpose.

The former MP and a group of his cadres held a secret meeting to murder Shahin. At that time, one man in the meeting leaked the information to his mother Aklima Begum. Aklima went to Pallabi Police Station to file a general diary, but police did not receive it. Next day of the plot, the goons attacked Shahin and injured him seriously.

Aklima lodged a case with the police station, but police showed negligence in arresting the attackers.

Sumon, one of the prime accused in that incident, was not first arrested though he was in the area.

Later, the court issued a warrant for his arrest and then police held him, but he came out of bail quickly.

Besides the murder of Shahin, six more murders were committed in the area in the last few years. The cadre groups of Awal had involvement in the murders.

Mohammad Kazi Wajeed Ali, officer-in-charge of Pallabi Police Station, could not be contacted for his comment in this regard.

Ariful Islam, additional deputy commissioner (Pallabi Zone) of Mirpur Crime Division of the DMP, told the Daily Sun that whenever they got complaints, they took legal action against the accused.

“We arrested the accused and produced them before the court, which sent them to jail. Later, they came out of bail. We had nothing to do in this regard,” he said.

After the arrest of MP Awal, the people of Laxmipur-1 constituency began to speak against his criminal activities.

Belal Ahmed, former mayor of Ramganj Municipality and general secretary of the municipal unit of Awami League, said that after becoming lawmaker with boat symbol, Awal created division among the local Awami league leaders and activists.

They carried out tortures on them who did not support him while many were indicted in false cases.

Former Joint Convener of Ramganj Upazila Unit of Jubo League Mostafizur Rahman said Awal is known to all in the area as a land grabber and cheat.

He made huge money using the AL. “We could not say anything against him at that time.”

Awal was secretary general of Bangladesh Tarikat Federation. In 2018, he was sacked from the party. Next year, he founded Islami Ganatantrik Party and became its chairman. He is the owner of Heavily Developer Properties Ltd.
