Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged that the incumbent government has ‘destroyed’ all the democratic institutions of the country.

“This government has done the big damage to the country by destroying all the democratic institutions. Today, the harassment of journalist Rozina Islam is not an isolated incident. Earlier, journalist couple Sagar and Runi was killed,” he said.

The BNP leader made the statement while speaking at a discussion arranged by Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal at the National Press Club in the capital on Friday.

“The government wants to give journalists punishment through Rozina Islam. It’s a character of fascism. They (government) want to stop people scaring them,” he added.

Mirza Fakhrul said there is no alternative to ousting the incumbent Awami League government from the state power as the country’s people are being ‘repressed and oppressed’ during the current regime.

He criticized death of imprisoned Hefazat-e-Islam leader Maulana Iqbal Hossain while undergoing treatment in a hospital.

About health condition of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, Fakhrul said she is now suffering from post-Covid-19 heart and kidney complications. “I came to know from her physicians on Thursday night that she has no breathing problem,” he added.
