Former lawmaker MA Awal, ‘mastermind’ of businessman Shahin murder, was placed on four days’ remand and an accused in the case was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with law enforcers in the capital on Friday.

A Dhaka court placed Awal and two others accused in the case on a four-day remand. The two accused are Zahirul Islam Babu and Nur Mohammad Hasan.

Metropolitan Magistrate Nivana Khair Jesi passed the order after DB inspector Syed Iftekhar Hassan, also investigation officer of the case, produced them before the court with 10-day remand prayer.

The IO said Awal was the mastermind behind the killing and other accused executed the plot in his direction.

Awal had an enmity with the victim over land for a long time. Since Awal failed to grab the land, he hired goons to kill Shahin.

Awal, 50, a former MP from Lakshmipur-1 constituency, was arrested on Thursday in Bhairab area of Kishoreganj. Hasan was arrested in Chandpur and Babu from Patuakhali. When an RAB team conducted a drive in Pallabi area of the capital, a gang of terrorists fired at law enforcers, forcing them to fire back, RAB-4 commanding officer Md Mozammel Haque said.

Later, a man was found critically injured on the spot and was taken to a hospital where doctors declared him dead. The deceased, Manik, was the fifth accused in the murder case.

The RAB officer said they recovered a foreign arm and bullets from the spot.

Earlier on May 16, miscreants hacked Shahin to death in front of his six-year-old son inside a garage in Pallabi area over a land dispute.

Shahin’s mother filed a case against 20 named and 14 unnamed persons with Pallabi Police Station in the capital. Awal was made the prime accused.
