Detained Hefazat leader dies

Hefazat-e-Islam leader Maulana Iqbal Hossain, who was in jail after being arrested in connection with Mamunul Haque’s resort incident in Narayanganj’s Sonargaon, died in Mitford Hospital in the capital on Thursday.  

Subhash Kumar Ghosh, senior jail super of Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj, confirmed that Iqbal, president of Sonargaon upazila Khelafat Majlish and vice-president of the upazila Hefazat-e-Islam, died at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital at 3:00pm on Thursday. 

Narayanganj District Jail Superintendent Mahbubul Alam said Iqbal fell ill on May 11 and was first treated in the Sadar General Hospital. He was later admitted to Mitford Hospital under central jail, where he was undergoing treatment. Iqbal Hossain’s eldest daughter Mahbuba said, “We were told in the morning that he was very ill. Coming here we see he is already in ICU support. He was pronounced dead at 3:00pm.”
