Bangladesh reported 1,608 infections from the coronavirus in the last 24 hours till Wednesday morning, taking the caseload to 783,737.
The daily case tally is up by 336 than Tuesday’s 1,272. The uptick in the number of infections follows an increase in tests with 20,528 samples tested during the period against Tuesday’s 16,855.The national death toll has reached 12,248 with the deaths of 37 more Covid-19 patients over the last 24 hours. The case fatality rate has stood at 1.56 per cent.
The daily positivity rate has been reported at 7.83 per cent while the overall infection rate is now 13.62 per cent, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Some 1,923 more patients have recovered from the fatal disease in the last 24 hours, raising the total number of recoveries to 726,132. The recovery rate has risen to 92.65 per cent. Bangladesh reported its first three coronavirus cases on March 8 last year and the first virus-related death 10 days later.
Both infections and deaths from coronavirus started to decline from the first week of July last year and the fall continued till the first week of March this year.
However, the numbers started rising further from March 10. Highest 7,626 cases were reported on April 7 and record 112 deaths were registered on April 19. Following a fresh surge in both infections and deaths from the deadly pathogen, the government enforced a lockdown which has been extended until May 23.
