Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has blamed the responsible persons of health ministry for creating misunderstanding with journalists over the issue of journalist Rozina Islam.
“The incident occurred due to the silence of responsible officials at the health ministry. If someone responsible at the ministry briefed journalists on the day of the incident, such a misunderstanding would not have arisen,” he said.Quader, also general secretary of the ruling Awami League, said this while addressing a discussion through videoconferencing from his official residence on the parliament premises in the capital on Wednesday. The AL’s Relief and Social Welfare Sub-Committee arranged the discussion at the party’s Bangabandhu Avenue central office, marking the Homecoming Day of AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The minister came up with the remarks as Prothom Alo senior correspondent Rozina Islam was harassed and arrested by health ministry officials at the Secretariat when she was collecting information from the ministry on Monday.
Assuring that Rozina will get justice, Quader said that as a case has been filed to this end, the matter is now under trial if the journalist concerned is innocent, she will get justice.
“I urge journalist friends to keep patience and play a responsible role so that no instability and dissatisfaction is created in the minds of the people over this issue,” he said.
Reiterating that Sheikh Hasina’s government believes in the freedom of expression, he said there is no pressure on media now, while reports on various issues, including corruption and crime, are being published in the country’s media.
