Lightning kills 12 in 5 dists

At least 12 people were killed in separate incidents of lightning strike in Netrokona, Sunamganj, Kishoreganj, Mymensingh and Faridpur districts on Tuesday.

The incidents took place from noon to evening amid rain and thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind.

In Netrokona, at least eight farmers were killed and nine others injured as a streak of thunderbolt hit them while working in fields in three upazilas in the afternoon, said Superintendent of Police of the district Akbar Ali Munshi.

Of them, two died in Kendua and three each in Madan and Khaliajuri. Besides, five others sustained injuries in Khaliajuri and four in Madan, according to local sources.

The deceased were identified as Md Bayezid Miah, 42, of Boirati village and Fazlur Rahman, 55, of Kundali village in Kendua; Bipul Mia, 28, Asheque Miah, 32, of Jagannathpur village and Monir Hossain of Batuail village in Khaliajuri; Md Sharif, 18, and Atabur Rahman, 19, from Paschim Fatepur village and Zunaid, 8, son of Ishaque Miah of Takli village in Madan.

In Sunamganj, Abu Taher, 35, died after being struck by lightning in front of the upazila parishad of Doarabaza in the afternoon.

In Kishoreganj, Ariful Islam, 17, was killed after lightning hit him in Nikli upazila at noon.

In Mymensingh, a youth, Atiqul Islam, was struck by a thunderbolt while playing football at Khalishajan village in Tarakanda upazila, leaving him dead on the spot.

In Faridpur, farmer Kabir Sheikh, 41, was killed as he was struck by lightning while working at his jute field in Madhukhali upazila in the afternoon.
