Death of 26 in Padma

Police arrested the driver of the speedboat which was involved in a fatal accident that killed 26 passengers in the river Padma on May 3.

The arrestee was identified as Shah Alam, 38, the key accused in the case filed over the collision between a speedboat and a sand carrier on the river.

Shah Alam was undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital under police guard. He was handed over to Shibchar Police Around at 10:00pm on Sunday.

On May 3, at least 26 people lost their lives when a Banglabazar-bound speedboat from Shimulia ferry ghat capsized in the Padma after colliding with a sand-laden bulk carrier near Kathalbari ferry ghat.

Later, Police filed a case against the speedboat driver Shah Alam, owners Chandu Molla and Rezaul, and the lessee of the speedboat ghat Shah Alam Khan with Shibchar police station.

The Ministry of Shipping and the district administration formed two separate committees to investigate the accident.

On May 9, Rapid Action Battalion arrested Chandu Molla alias Chandu, 40, the owner of the speedboat which was involved in a fatal accident that killed 26 passengers in the River Padma on May 3.
