CHATTOGRAM: Police on Friday arrested two youths on charge of killing driver and helper of a covered van in a bid to loot the vehicle.

The arrestees were identified as Md Miraj Hawlader, 30, and Abu Sufian Sujan, 21.

Police arrested them from different areas of the city after a seven-month investigation.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Faruk Ul Hoque of Detective Branch of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) disclosed the matter at a press conference at his office on Saturday.

Sources said the arrestees along with their cohorts planned to snatch the imported goods from the covered van on its way from Chattogram Port.

As per the plan, accused Miraj, who was also a driver of another vehicle, boarded the covered van of victim driver Riad Hossain Sagor on October 2 last year. The covered van was carrying machineries of a company from the port.

When the vehicle reached Jorarganj under Mirsarai upazila, Riad and his helper Md Ali requested Miraj to drive it.

In the meantime, two other accused Sujan and Babu boarded the vehicle tactfully.

At one stage, the accused stabbed the driver and the helper to death onboard the covered van for snatching the machineries.

They dumped the body of the helper in Jorarganj and the driver near the Outer Ring Road in the city, said the DC Faruk.

The accused left the vehicle in Boropole area as it ran out of fuel, he said.

Later, police recovered the vehicle from the spot. The bodies were also recovered and separate cases were filed with the Halishahar and Jorarganj police station, he added.

On information, police arrested the duo on Friday and they admitted their involvement in the murders, he added.
